How Will Guild Wars 2 Tell Us Its Stories |
As we all know that the storylines in Guild Wars 2 is one of the biggest brilliant points in the game. We have to say that the game developer, ArenaNet is a good story teller. This is the challenge facing developer ArenaNet. In an interview with PC Gamer, lore and continuity designer Ree Soesbee revealed some of the ways the team is able to face the task. In fact, according to Soesbee, the story begins with character creation. Who the player chooses, and what they select as interests will custom tailor the story. She gave an example when she said, "The biography system helps us do that. If you pick a character, like, 'My parents died when I was three. I am an orphan. I lived on the streets.' Clearly you want a story with a little more tragedy."
Soesbee continue and said, "One of the human things is, 'I wish I'd joined the circus as a child.' It is clearly not going for tragedy. The story with the circus and references to the circus later in the game are going to be funny references. Your feel for the game when you play it through will have that humor you chose to have. We're sneakily getting the player to tell us what kind of game they want and then giving it to them."
On the subject of choice versus a consistent narrative Soesbee said, "I would rather have a game that says 'we're going to give you gw 2 gold 50 percent of the options that you would have in real life, and we're going to make those 50 percent of the options make a difference' than have a game that says 'I'm going to give you 100 percent options, but it's really not going to matter that much because the story has to be this way.'"
